Is there any way of seeing a dermatologist without a gp referal (uk only please :)?

thanks :)Is there any way of seeing a dermatologist without a gp referal (uk only please :)?
You have to see your GP for referral to the dermatologist on the NHS. I've wondered the same thing before, but found out it was not possible. In the end I went private. Is there any way of seeing a dermatologist without a gp referal (uk only please :)?
I tried to do this and I am insured for medical treatment.I wanted a second appointment with the dermatologist. I was told by the dermatologists secretary that the dermo needed a letter of referral because more than a year had elapsed since my last appointment.

If you are a NHS patient, you haven't got a hope in hell. If however you want to see a demo privately, you could bluff it out. Make an appointment and tell the dermo that your doctor said that he would send a letter of referral. The dermo wants your cash and he will probably examine you.
Yes, of course.

The UK has both a free NHS system that is accessed through your GP and also private medical care that you can choose for yourself. Library, GP office, local pharmacy, Pub might be able to recommend a practitioner, or if there is a local Health Office, ask them,

You pay, you choose!
http://www.ramsayhealth.co.uk/

Give them a ring and ask what is the procedure -can you be self referred.
Yes you can go private..don't forget your credit card..
Normal practice would definitely be to be referred via your GP.
yes if you pay

While go to school to become a dermatologist..?

so i'm considering becoming a dematologist because i love helping people with their skin and i dont know if this is a lame question but while your doing your 9 years of school would you have a small job on the side in the medical field or would you have to have some other job like waitressing or being a bank teller...etcWhile go to school to become a dermatologist..?
Very few people are able to manage being able to work and attend the 4 years of medical school. Once you finish medical school you will get paid while in residency, but many people do work some additional hours in ERs or other settings to help pay back the loans they took during medical school. While go to school to become a dermatologist..?
im sure you could intern or be an assistant in the medical field

but until you have a license you won't be doing a big job

I'm starting to get male pattern baldness (it's receding). My dermatologist recommended rogaine and propecia.?

But this stuff is expensive ($70/month for propecia and not sure about the rogaine). No guarantees that it will work. What do I do? Do I take the pills and use the foam? Or do I just let nature run its course?

Knock on wood, not yet losing hair on the back of my head or the center of my head. Just at the temples.I'm starting to get male pattern baldness (it's receding). My dermatologist recommended rogaine and propecia.?
I've had excellent retention and regrowth with the Rogaine foam on my hairline...I've also added Nizoral 2% (prescription strength, available on Amazon.com from Canada). Nizoral has been clinically shown to reduce DHT in the scalp which causes hairloss

I understand adding Propecia to the mix is extremely powerful as well, but I felt a lot of side effects (most people don't)...if you can take it, you might consider taking it...just consider it like another bill. Rogaine foam is only like 40 bucks for 3 months....and nizorals cheap tooI'm starting to get male pattern baldness (it's receding). My dermatologist recommended rogaine and propecia.?
you're probably the rule, and not the exception.

  • Can you reccomend any good prescribed acne medication? im going to the dermatologist tomorrow.?

I use Azelex and it works pretty well. The first times you use it, it tingles and itches pretty bad. But then your skin gets used to it, and now I hardly have break outs. Its worked wonderfully for me.Can you reccomend any good prescribed acne medication? im going to the dermatologist tomorrow.?
Um, that's the Derm's job...not someone without a medical degree. Report Abuse
Can you reccomend any good prescribed acne medication? im going to the dermatologist tomorrow.?
you do not need medication. keep your face clean and dry, watch your diet, no greasy foods, oils in body makes acne.
Okay...it's not a prescribed medication, but it works...for me anyway. Try GLA...It's a natural product that balances out your hormones. I don't know how bad your acne is, but wouldn't hurt to try it...

My skin has become discoloured around my neck. should i see a dermatologist?

It may be a hormone problem. That is one of the symptoms for sure. If concerned see an endocrinologist. If they say your ok then go to a dermatologist. My skin has become discoloured around my neck. should i see a dermatologist?
    go and get professional help.

    Dermatologist v. Hormone specialist?

I'm in my mid twenties and suffer from acne (and not just when it's that time of month). I'm also trying to get pregnant but have very irregular periods (obviously the likely cause of my problems). Should I see a dermatologist? Do they treat the cause of acne or just the symptoms?

    Dermatologist and moles?

I have a new spot on my back and two moles that Ive had forever but have changed. I seen the doc but I have to see a dermo too, but I have to wait for the referal to go through and appointment set up. It could take a month to get in....so what do I do. I am already scared. I wish I could just walk in and see the derm, I hate that you have to wait. Will everything be ok with having to wait, I mean if its anything it should be in an early stage right? So a month of waiting is that ok.Dermatologist and moles?
As far as the wait time, I think the real questions are:

--What is your family history of moles and of skin cancers?

--What is your history with other moles being checked and/or removed? Were they benign?

--How long has it been since you've noticed the changed moles actually change before you called for an appointment?

The answers to these questions will have an impact on the waiting time's appropriateness.

One thing you can do for yourself in advance is to take a picture periodically of your moles and keep it for yourself to monitor for any changes in shape, color, size, borders. This is especially helpful if you have a digital camera. Also, for moles you can't generally see or take a picture of, have a relative or friend take a picture at regular intervals for monitoring purposes.

I have some other info. for you that I don't want to put out publically, but since you don't allow e-mail, you'll have to contact me directly yourself if you're interested.

    Good luck.Dermatologist and moles?
It will be fine....it's most likely nothing, and if it is, just be glad you're getting it taken care of.....most people let moles go a lot longer, or never even pay attention to them...
A few months is fine, no worries. Moles tend to change but getting invasive quickly in practically never heard of. Relax and keep the appointment.
Yes, dear, everything will be 'just fine' and you should 'stop worrying' while you 'wait' to see the Dermatologist. You 'could have' skin cancer, but even most of those aren't 'really bad' ... and if you are like I was, and have MALIGNANT MELANOMA then your 'regular doctor' would have made an 'emergency appointment' with the dermatologist. GOOD LUCK my dear. But BELIEVE IN THE DOCTORS, because they 'know' a LOT MORE than we do ... and they'll 'take care of us properly' given half a chance.

    Dermatologist or Just the Doctor?

If I am interested in getting some acne medication for moderate/severe acne, would I need to go to a dermatologist, or can I just go through my primary doctor? Thanks guys!Dermatologist or Just the Doctor?
Start with your regular doctor. In most countries you would need to see a dermatologist for Tretinoin or Isotretinoin treatments, but your local doctor could start with a trial of antibiotics.Dermatologist or Just the Doctor?
If you don't need a referral, I would go straight to a dermatologist.

Have you been to a Dermatologist ?

have you ever been to a derm?

    Dermatologist what will happen?

Hi there i live in the uk and recently i went to the doctors for a cold but enquired about a mole on my leg which the doctor looked to be concerned about, he reffered me to a dermatologist for an immediate appointment as i also have loads of other moles on my body. Has anyone been through a similar experience and if so what will i have to expect as i havn't got a clue what will happen, thanks.Dermatologist what will happen?
Whatever you do, don't freak out. I did and it didn't achieve ANYTHING.

The dermatologist will just look at your moles, probably using some sort of magnifying glass and then will explain to you if he is going to remove it then and there etc.

But even though my moles that I had removed looked dodgy to the dermatologist, they all turned out to be fine. And I am literally covered in moles all over my back and arms.

But really, just take it one step at a time, chances are you'll be fine.Dermatologist what will happen?
It should be fine i have been through that and all my moles were fine except for one that was changing colors. He removed that one with some local anesthetic and 1 stitch. Didn't hurt one bit. He sent it to get it tested cuz he was worried about it being cancerous. It was not cancer so he just told me the warning signs to look for as far as moles changing and stuff and just informed me about things to watch for since i have such fair skin.
Dont worry. I havent had it done, but normally the dermatologist will just look at them to see if they look normal or not.

If you are looking for home remedy to reduce wrinkles, try this.

Smear honey on your face and leave it for as long as possible (but 5-10mins a day will do). then rinse off with tepid water mixed with a teaspoon of cider vinegar - this has a neutral pH and will act as a toner.

And if you have some bucks, Lifecell anti wrinkle cream would be a good choice. You can have more information here.

    What happens at the dermatologist?

I have to get a head to toe exam and my sister went last week and said she had to get naked but didn't go into detail. I'm 14 and I want to know how much touching will go on. Please explain the whole process and maybe your own expirience. Please email me a full expirience that would be awesome. What happens at the dermatologist?
i haven't really experienced it yet, but one of my friends have. he said he had to get naked too, but not fully naked. she'll ask to take your shirt off first then put it back on and take your pants and underwear off. the dermatologist tells you to take off your underwear so that she can check your level of physical maturity, if your in puberty already or something. all i know is she takes a look at how ';thick'; your pubic hair is to determine how mature you are and how to approach your skin, as child adolescent or adult, there wasn't any touching involved, just looking and examining. My friend said that the doctor asked him to take his pants off and etc... he asked why and she explained. He told me it was very very awkward and weird cus he was a guy and she was...well a girl and was really old, maybe 60 or something. but i don't think you should worry about it that much, i mean she's/he's a doctor their supposed to ask these kinna stuff cus its their job, otherwise they wouldn't know what to do with you. just hope yours isn't a guy :)) otherwise it might get really awkward.

    What is a dermatologist?

what can a dermatologist help us with? What is a dermatologist?
More than just a skin doctor, maybe this information will help you.

Dermatologist: A dermatologist is a physician who has expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with benign and malignant disorders of the skin, mouth, external genitalia, hair and nails, as well as a number of sexually transmitted diseases. Dermatologists have extensive training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers, melanomas, moles, and other tumors of the skin, contact dermatitis and other allergic and non-allergic disorders, and in the recognition of the skin manifestations of systemic (including internal malignancy), and infectious diseases. The dermatologist also has expertise in the management of cosmetic disorders of the skin such as hair loss and scars.

To be certified as a dermatologist, a physician must have had at least four years of post-graduate residency training accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The first broad-based general clinical year is followed by three years of intensive training in dermatology including dermatopathology and dermatologic surgery. In addition to the successful completion of the four years of required training, the certification process includes a comprehensive examination administered by the American Board of Dermatology.

With this background and knowledge, dermatologists are singularly qualified to diagnose and treat the wide variety of dermatologic conditions as well as benign and malignant skin tumors. Dermatologists also have expertise in the care of normal skin and in the prevention of skin diseases and skin cancers.

    What do Dermatologists Do?

Dermatologists perform many specialized diagnostic procedures including microscopic examination of skin biopsy specimens, cytological smears, patch tests, photo tests, potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparations, fungus cultures and other microbiologic examination of skin scrapings and secretions. Treatment methods used by dermatologists include externally applied, injected, and internal medications, selected x-ray and ultraviolet light therapy, and a range of dermatologic surgical procedures. The training and experience of dermatologists in dermatologic surgery include electrosurgery, cryosurgery with the use of freezing surgical units, laser surgery, nail surgery, biopsy techniques and excisional surgery with appropriate closures, including flaps and grafts. Among some of the techniques used by dermatologists for the correction of cosmetic defects are dermabrasion, chemical face peels, hair transplants, injections of materials into the skin for scar revision, sclerosis of veins, and laser surgery of vascular lesions of the skin, including certain birth marks. Patients seeking a dermatologist may come directly or may be referred by another physician.A certified specialist in dermatology may subspecialize and become certified for Special Qualification.

In 1988, an AAD Task Force on Professional Guidelines under the Committee on Guidelines of Care was appointed by the Academy's President to develop a document that would clearly define what a dermatologist is and does, as well as detail the extensive and rigorous medical and surgical training required prior to specialty board certification. The first report on credentialing and privileging was approved by the AAD Board of Directors in 1990. It is periodically updated and reflects the best data available at the time it is prepared:What is a dermatologist?

    go for homeopathy treatment
Ok, I know this is going to be a terrible loss but you need to STOP using any kind of chemical on your face for at least 2 weeks (14 days). Rinse your face with cold water in the morning and before you go to bed. Using ANY chemical on the face involves a reaction within the skin cells if your face is attempting to heal a damaged area you are going to be unable to heal properly. I would also recommend seeing a doctor, tell him that you have stopped applying chemicals on your face, he will more than likely perform a variety of simple tests which will allow him to dertermine if there is any permanent damage. Good luck!
you need to see a Dr to see what damage you did.
Dear Honey, try applying termaric powder mixed with milk cream, apply 4 15-20 minutes and let it dry than wash with warm water, that will help u.
For time being i advise you to apply the nycil powder only.

Please don't apply any sunscreen, chemical or other creams or bleach etc.

Going to dermatologist for first time, help please???

so i am going to a dermatologist and i have very little acne but my mom is making me go for some reason....anyways, can you wear makeup to the dermatologist, will she make me take it off? i look like crap without make up so i don't want to have to take it off, but whatever....anyway, what should I expect?Going to dermatologist for first time, help please???
I won't leave the house without makeup, but when I go to the dermatologist, I take a wet washcloth in a baggie. When I'm shown to a room, I'll wipe off everything on my face except eye makeup. After she's done with whatever she's going to do, I reapply my makeup in the restroom before I leave. If I'm going straight home afterwards, I don't take great pains with it, the bare minimum will do.

The Dr. really needs to see your bare face to diagnose any problems you may have, so just take your makeup with you.Going to dermatologist for first time, help please???
Wow! I wanna go to YOUR doctor! Report Abuse

I go to my dermatologist at least once a year to get a skin cancer screening. That's where the doctor just looks over your entire body, miuns what's covered by your underwear, to see if there are any pre-cancerous spots or moles. I have a lot of moles on my body and I've been sunburned many times as a kid so I like to be sure and catch anything early. I had a mole cut off during my last visit in fact. It wasn't anything major and I didn't feel a thing.

If you are going for acne the doctor will most likely instruct you on how to keep your face clean and maybe give you some medication. I don't think it'll be necessary to remove makeup but I'm a guy so I wouldn't know. I would amagine makeup isn't good of acne though. Keep your face clean as much as possible.
Hear it from me, who went to a Dermatologist 10 years ago and at that time, I spent over $400 and nothing happened. This doctor was the best in town at the time. Acne is an age and hormone thing. Try to work on your diet and stay away from greasy and spicy food. Also, use cosmetic and skincare products like Origins. Believe me, you will grow out of it. Re your situation now, yes, they will take off your makeup and inject medications in your acne. It is painful and the acne will come back-
i would not wear it.write down any thing you want to ask first.and ask if wearing make up everyday can dammage skin. what she recommends to take it off, moisturizer etc.also if sun tanning helps or not acne...and if it is true that eating chocolates and chips make it worse.

    good luck.
Yes, they want you to have a clean face when you see a dermatologist but if your that worried about it just wear makeup like normal but bring some facewash to the Dr.'s office. Use their bathroom and wash your face before they call you...you know your gonna have to wait forever anyway
My mom went and she never had to take her makeup off, then again she wasn't there for acne, but a cancerous mole. anyway too much info. ummm. i think if u go w/o makup youll be better off, just when ur done, bring some to apply after unless ur told otherwise. i hope this works out for u. good luck to ya.
Sorry sis, but im a client at my demo office and she made me take my make up the first time i went there
If this is your first time, she might do an evaluation. If you go for treatments, then you will take off your makeup.
If you are going for facial reasons, you will most likely have to remove your makeup. The Dr. will examine your skin, and possibly do a skin cancer check- he/she may use a special lamp to see what kind of damage lies beneath... so to speak and then he/she will talk to you about what you consider to be a concern and will prescribe medications accordingly. It is good to get any of your issues under control while you are young because good habits last a life time!

  • My dermatologist assured me that doxycycline does not effect birth control. anybody elses dr tell them this?

Your dermatologist is a liar. If you are on a hormonal type of birth control (i.e. pill, ring, patch, shot) you need to be using a back up method, like a condom. Tetracyclines (that's the medication class that doxycycline is in) interfere with hormonal birth control, rendering it ineffective. Go to rxlist.com or consult any drug book and it will tell you to use an alternate form of birth control. And I might suggest finding a different dermatologist... one who knows what drugs interfere with each other.

Try the natural way! Aloe Vera has been used to treat eczema however because its not a drug it cannot be prescribed therefore doctors will not tell you the costly truth. don鈥檛 just take my word for it, ask your doctor and look into his eye when you do and ask yourself why they didn鈥檛 tell you the natural way to protect your selfDoes anyone know a really great dermatologist in eczema, dermamtitis and that its not intrested in just money?
USE PRObiotics!!! Eczema is your body's inability to retain moisture in your skin. Thus, you have dry skin patches. You can use lotions which treat the symptom. If you want to treat the root causes, one which is very likely to be your skin not getting enough vitamins. Then you may want to take something like:

GNC: Digestive Health Powder(AWESOME PRODUCT). It contains prebiotics, PRObiotics and digestive enzymes that help breakdown and absorb the nutrients from your food better. All your organs improve especially the largest one that takes more vitamins... YOUR SKIN. Take a product like this for about a week. You may be VERY surprised at the improvement.

Note you should be taking a multivitamin and fish oil along with a good diet that includes fruits, veggies, lean meat, long grains and water.

Oh yeah, take warm.. not hot showers since the heat pulls more moisture out of the skin.

Probiotics helped clear up about 80% of my kid's eczema in less than a week. I had to do the research to find this information since all the doctors only suggested lotion that did NOT clear up the problem. Please let me know if this worked for you.

Can i go to the dermatologist just for a prescription? ?

i want to try retin a but do not want to continuously go to the dermatologistCan i go to the dermatologist just for a prescription? ?
You can go to a Dermatologist and if they feel you could use Retin A they will write you the prescription. Can i go to the dermatologist just for a prescription? ?
Oh no. You only have to go to the dermatologist once for that. She/He will write you a prescription and you just have to go and pick it up. Usually they WILL suggest that you make a follow up visit in about a month to see if your face has cleared up. I never did that and suffered no consequences. If you do see that it's not working for you though, definitely make a second appointment and have them suggest another product.

Just an FYI: your face will get worse before it gets better. It will break out more, be more red, and peel a lot within the first month. This is completely normal and I suggest that you stick with it for at least 2-3 months before you decide if it's working for you or not.
yeah, actually u can go to any doctor for a retin a prescription..my family doc, wrote me one, so I didn't have to pay the high price cost of a derm
    yes

What does it mean when a product is 'recommended by dermatologists'?

Many skin care products all boast that they are 'recommended by dermatologists'. Are there any guidelines as to what these products contain or what there performance is?

Any insight would be appreciated. What does it mean when a product is 'recommended by dermatologists'?
when a group ';recommends it'; = they were paid for their opinions

and professionally they may agree that the product has ingredients that are KNOWN

for helping this or that condition.

but I (they) would never use the stuff

all the bestWhat does it mean when a product is 'recommended by dermatologists'?
All it means is that someone (or possibly more than one) calling theself a ';dermatologist'; agreed to recomend it's use. They could be the worst dematologis on the planet, and they are compensated so their opinion means as much as me telling you to buy said product.

Try Head %26amp; Shoulders Dry Scalp Care first (use daily) ... then, if that still doesn't work, try Nizoral shampoo (use only twice per week). There's no need to go to a dermatologist unless your problem doesn't respond to these over-the-counter, FDA-approved treatments.

    Dermatologist while breastfeeding?

Hormones aren't being very nice to me at times. First the acne because of pregnancy, that led to a few craters, now more acne because of the hormones due to breastfeeding. So I made an appointment with a really good Dermatologist near by. Do you know if it's safe to use any of the steroid medications he may perscribe, while breastfeeding? If so, any thing any one of you would like to recommend? Any face washes and moisturizers? Thanks in advance!Dermatologist while breastfeeding?
I have horrible facial skin, and when I finally broke down and asked my doctor about it, she said to try Eucerin Cream. I tried it and it smoothed out my skin really well. Try not to use very much soap when you wash your face, rinse really well, and pat your skin dry really lightly. Then take just a little bit of the Eucerin and lightly massage it into your skin. Make sure you do it every day and night so that way you get the full benefits.Dermatologist while breastfeeding?
i've never found anything better than ProActiv Solution. not sure how safe it is re: breastfeeding, but i'd guess it's at least as safe as steroids.

    Dermatologist question ?

I'm looking to persue a modeling career, but I've got a little bit of facial acne.

If I were to see a derm. what are some things that would be done to get this fixed?

And what would be a general cost ?

    Thanks ;DDermatologist question ?
I just went to the Derm for the first time last week. I was nervous since I'm 18 and havent been to one, ever. I sat in the room and waited and then he looked at my face and prescribed me a medication. I'm on Duac -- I dont have acne anymore .. but he saw I had some scarring and a few hormonal zits. The Duac has been great!

My sister went and she was breaking out and had some blackheads - no scars though. Same derm. prescribed her Retin-A-Micro .. and then she went to Differin.

So it all depends on your skin. With the costs -- I have insurance so that covers ALOT of it. I'm guessing it was about 100$-200$ for my Duac Prescription.

But I'm getting a 3 months supply too, so it depends on how much you order. It also depends on how long the tube lasts. Duac lasts about 3 months (has to be refridgerated) so I mean I guess the 100$ evens it out since it lasts pretty long.

I would start going to the Derm. now. My derm. told me its better to start treatments in the Summer because your face heals faster than in the winter. And of course as your face changes so will the prescriptions.

Hope that helps! And good luck with your modeling!

Which doctor to go to, dermatologist or urologist?

which doctor would be better suited for genital warts? I have already seen my normal doctor but he has been unsuccesful. I have tried many different methods with no luck. I really need to talk with someone with more experience in this subject. thanksWhich doctor to go to, dermatologist or urologist?
you can remove genital warts by surgery, freezing, laser, acid or cream but genital warts can reappear again and again because genital warts appears when your immune system is weak!

HPV is the virus that causes genital warts. People can be infected with HPV and never show any symptoms. Others will develop genital warts. These warts can stay the same size, grow, or go away on their own. It largely depends on the infected person's immune system. A healthy immune system means your body may be able to suppress the virus and not show symptoms.

Even after the warts go away, the person will always remain infected with HPV. That person can spread the virus even without showing symptoms.

so you must build up your immune system because your body can get rid of genital warts by itself if your immune system will be strong! so eat more healthy food, more vitamins and more sport activities! (No smoking, no beer/ale, no booze, no drugs, no junk food, no fast food garbage, no sugary sweet soda's. Get on a good, balanced, healthy diet including plenty of boiled or steamed vegetables.

Drink P L E N T Y O F W A T E R , fruit juices %26amp; fat free milk. Snack on lots of RAW fruit %26amp; veggies. Get up one hour early every morning %26amp; take a BRISK 30 minute walk - then - do the same thing again in the evening after dinner. Make sure you eat a good, balanced breakfast daily. You get your energy for the day from your breakfast meal. Get 8 hours sleep each night. Flip your mattress over so it will level out to give you a good night's rest. Slack off too much coffee %26amp; tea) also you must use herbal treatment!

in that case Wartrol is a good (probably the best) product that gets rid of genital warts comparatively fast and makes you feel more confident knowing that they wont reappear again! It works by stimulating your immune system to fight the HPV virus that causes the warts. of course it is better if you use full course (5 months - if I remember correctly).

It worked and still works for me!

I do not know if any pharmacies carry Wartrol but I do know that you should purchase it directly from the manufacturer and read more about the product here

    http://www.wartrol.com/?aid=749165

    good luck!

Working in women's health + personal experienceWhich doctor to go to, dermatologist or urologist?
Dermatologist cuz they are not acutaly looking at your junk, just at your warts.
you must build up your immune system!

of course it will be more successful if you will use some herbal medicaments too!

for example wartrol , amilos etc
    I'd say dermatologist.

I know dermatologists say that pore reducing creams don't work, but is there a medical procedure that will?

What kinds of medical procedures are used to reduce pore size? Maybe professional microdermabrasion or lasering?

Do you know links to any ';before and afters'; for reference?I know dermatologists say that pore reducing creams don't work, but is there a medical procedure that will?
Professional microderma can help, because it sucks away dead skin cells and debris, cleaning away pores and allowing the pores to regain their original shape and size. I've tried microderma on my own skin and it had good results after 3-4 sessions. give it a try.
